Is this a genuine ad? Is the owner reliable?

The owners are responsible for the content and accuracy of their advert on our website. We maintain a record of each property and if we repeatedly receive complaints about an owner, the account will be disabled immediately as we only wish to advertise properties where we are certain that our visitors are in good hands.

The owners are required to forward us proof of ownership before they are allowed to add a property to the website. Furthermore the owners are required to pay SelfCateringHomes.ie one year in advance to advertise their properties, so a person intending to defraud, must first pay us and this is very unlikely to happen.

If you are still uncertain about renting a holiday home from a private owner, you may also contact the owner by telephone to make sure you feel comfortable with the person and the way they run their rental business.

What is the usual procedure of payment?

There is not a fixed standard of how payment is arranged with the owner; however many use the following methods

• On making a reservation, 20-50% percent of the total amount is paid
• About a month before arrival the balance is paid

You may also be asked to pay a refundable deposit upon arrival, in case of damage to contents of the property. Some owners will accept cheques while others have set up their own paypal account in order for the clients to pay by credit card.

If you liked a holiday home and sent an enquiry to the owner via the website, you will receive a reply directly from the owner. All enquiries are forwarded to the owners and it is their responsibility to reply.
