Before ever arriving in Mallow visitors will fall in love with area based on its name alone. Mallow, in Irish Magh Eala, means “valley of the swans”. What town could have a more beautiful description? And lovely Mallow lives up to its name. It is the perfect destination for the self catering tourists looking far a laid back and charming adventure.

Originally a market town due to the surrounding farms, the town of Mallow has become a commerce centre and tourist town in the past few years. The local people and elected officials have worked hard to bring the town back to life while respecting its interesting heritage.

The standing stones of Mallow tell of the town’s ancient past. As with most standing stones, no one quite knows their history, but the selfcatering visitor will enjoy a tour of them and the Mallow countryside.

Mallow offers visitors many fun activities and attractions. Mallow Castle, built in the 12th century, was first the home of local earls. The castle was later taken into possession by the Queen of England, who let her local dignitaries take up residence on the estate. The castle was lived in as a home until the early 1920’s when it became a national monument. The newer part of the castle is still considered private but one may visit the ruins of the original Mallow Castle.

At the end of the town square is the famous Mallow Clock House. Reminiscent of the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the Clock House was built in 1855 in the Tudor style. At one time, the “wilder” men of the city met at the house for drinking and gambling.

Also popular in the 1800’s was the Spa House. The town of Mallow became a popular spa destination for those looking to take to the waters for health and relaxation. The spa had its own pump room and offered hot and cold spa baths. The Spa House is open for the public to tour. The spa is also the location of the famous Lady’s Well, which flows into the Dogs Head fountain. In days past the water from the fountain was bottled and considered curative.

Mallow also has a thriving literary history. Thomas Davis, the famous Irish author was born here and visitors may tour his birth home. Canon Sheehan, another novelist, was also born in Mallow. While serving as a priest in County Cork he wrote many of his famous works in Kinsale. His home is also open for tours. A third local literati is William O’Brien. Born in Kinsale he went on to a long career in journalism. He also served in Parliament. Visitors may see his grave near the Catholic Church.
