Derryhippo Cottage Self Catering is a picturesque thatched farmhouse cottage. Newly restored, it is situated in a peaceful secluded part of the Irish countryside. Derryhippo Cottage boasts all modern conveniences including a large fridge freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, microwave, and central heating. Accommodation comprises three bedrooms, sitting room with open fireplace, dining room, large kitchen, bathroom with electric shower. There are timber floors throughout.
External features include large enclosed garden and patio and barbeque.
Nearby villages includes Creggs, Castlecoote, and Athleague, which provide shopping facilities with the most modern supermarkets. Our rivers and lakes will provide you with ample opportunity for fishing. The river Suck is noted for its variety of species of fish which include Bream, Pike, Rudd, Perch, and Trout. An ideal breeding river for fish, it boasts catches of some very large specimens, especially of Bream and Pike. One of the important events on the angler’s calendar is the fishing competition (open to all visitors) held here each August. Access to favourable fishing points is freely available.
Focal points for fishing on the Suck include:
* Donamon Castle situated in a very scenic area with 30 new fishing stands with car parking facilities on the riverbank.
* Castlestrange enhanced for some by its proximity to the famous “La Tene” stone.
Fortune has also blessed us with an assortment of lakes and ponds. Recently a roadlink to Hollygrove Island has been created, the breeding ground for Tench. Hybrids and Pike inhabit Black’s Lake, and Stoneham’s Lake is renowned for its very large Pike, Bream, and Rudd. Boats are readilky available. Supply and storage, of bait, storage of tackle and drying facilities are provided.
Nature lovers, walkers and cyclists will enjoy the “Suck Valley”, a walk that stratches from Ballygar through Athleague, Castlecoote, Creggs and Ballymoe to Castlerea. You will find plenty of nightlife. Relax in one of our “Pubs” or comfortable lounges. If Disco dancing is your strong point you have a choice of three nightclubs in Roscommon. Local views regularly feature some of the top traditional bands in the country in concert, and you may be lucky enough to hit upon one of our spontaneous “Irish Sessions” famous worldwide for their music and “craic”.
