Listowel has the unique distinction of being the literary capital of Ireland. It has been the home and inspiration of many famous writers. Many may be familiar with Dr. John B. Keane who immortalized the beauty of the area in poem. Long known as a farming area, Listowel is now coming to be known as one of County Kerry’s foremost cultural areas. One of the town’s best cultural attractions can be found at the Seanchai Kerry Literary and Cultural Centre. The centre was dedicated in 2001 and serves as the cultural centre for all of county Kerry. Focusing on the great writers, poets, and visual artists of County Kerry, the centre is situated in an ancient home from the 1800’s that has been redesigned and redecorated in a timely manner.

Self catering visitors will enjoy a visit to the centre where they will come to appreciate the importance of the County Kerry literary artists. Before stories were written in Ireland they were passed by word of mouth and the ancient art of storytelling revives that local tradition. Kenmare has existed in one form or another since the 17th century. The town has been diligent in preserving its past and many relics can be seen today. A wonderful way to experience the Irish coastland is by boat, and charter boats are available for visitors to rent along the waterfront.

One other interesting and exciting way you see the Kenmare countryside is on horseback. Local stables will rent horses for guests to ride on the areas many trails or along the miles of coastline. Dingle, Co. Kerry, Ireland.

Filed under: English, Travel Guides — Tags: , , , , , , , , — SelfCateringHomes.ie @ 12:26 pm

A self catering holiday home on the Dingle Peninsula in county Kerry, Ireland will be a most memorable holiday. A short distance from the larger tourist town of Killarney, Dingle Town is a quaint and peaceful village, perfect for the self catering family holiday. The Dingle countryside offers some of County Kerry’s best views and when combined with the charm of Dingle Town you will feel as if you have stepped back in history to another era.

Dingle is also known by its Gaelic name, An Daingean. This name was given to Dingle Town against the citizens’ wishes by the Irish government in 2005. Because Dingle Town is an area where the Irish language is spoken the Irish government deemed the name change necessary. You will see no road signs for dingle as the name has been officially changed, but the local citizens still love Dingle and call the town by its original name.

Fungie is perhaps Dingle’s most famous resident. Fungie is a bottle nosed dolphin that has lived in the area waters for over twenty years. He was first discovered as he “escorted” the ships of local fisherman in and out of the harbour. As the fishermen realized how tame Fungie, (a name they gave him), was they began to let their children swim with him. Today, self catering visitors to Dingle can catch a ride with a local fisherman and see Fungie themselves. The trip will take about one hour and if scheduled for the morning hours you may get to swim with the loveable dolphin. Many visitors have heard about Fungie and, falling in love with his story, come to Dingle to visit him.

For visitors interested in local history, the Sciuird Archaeology Adventure is for you. This tour will give self catering holiday home visitors the opportunity to discover the history of the local area with a local historian. The historian will lead your tour, a combination of bus and walking. Along the tour route visitors will see many monuments from the Stone Age and the medieval era.

Dingle also has a very nice aquarium on the waterfront. The aquarium in Dingle is home to many sea creatures and exhibits. A tunnel allows visitors to feel as if they are walking under the sea as fish swim all around. You will be able to get up close and personal with lobsters, crabs, starfish, and many other wonders of the deep. The aquarium is a great activity for dreary days when it is impossible to enjoy the local outdoor attractions.

The self catering visitor to dingle will find many opportunities to shop in the town’s small shops and boutiques. Many stores are dedicated to local handmade crafts. The Weaver’s shop is one of the most unique local shops. Owner and weaver Lisbeth Mucahy is extremely good at her art and weaves beautiful tapestries. All of her work is reminiscent of the local areas, such as the craggy cliffs, majestic mountains, and grassy fields. Items from her store make a great keepsake of your time in Dingle.
